ULTISOL

Ultisol is a collective art zine by NC creatives for NC creatives. This zine will contain art, writing, and otherwise visual creative works that are submitted by creators like you!

The aim is that this zine will help facilitate collaborations, work, discussions, and artistic community by giving NC artists a unified platform where they can showcase their projects.

The word "ultisol" (pronounced uhl-teh-sawl) refers to the red clay soil that is found throughout North Carolina. The name of the zine honors the land we live on and the clay that many of our artists create with! It's also fun to say out loud.

submissions for ULTISOL vol II are open!

overview

There's no theme, so any submitted work can go into the zine. Any creative in North Carolina is welcome to submit their work, regardless of experience or "skill level," whatever that means. Submissions are not limited to finished art and writing. If you made it and want people to see it, you can submit it here. Seriously go nuts, this space is for you and your work! You'll retain full rights to anything you submit. You can submit original work that has been published elsewhere (as long as you have the right to do so). Feel free to submit more than one project. Please note, while I will include as many submissions as physically possible, there still might be more submissions than space available in the zine. If that's the case, including a variety of different works will take priority. If your work doesn't make it in, that is not a reflection on the quality of your work or you as an artist! All contributors will receive a physical copy of the zine.

formatting guidelines

for art

- Image files only (jpg, png, etc)- Must be print quality (aim for 300 dpi) PLEASE NOTE: Blurry, extremely compressed, or otherwise low quality images will not be accepted!- The orientation and ratio of your art doesn’t matter too much, but your submission must reasonably fit on a 5.5x8.5 inch page- Each artwork gets one page

for writing

- Acceptable file types include: pdf, docx, and google doc (no screenshots or images please)- If submitting handwritten work, please make sure it’s a high quality scan that is legible. Also, please send a typed copy as well for accessibility :)- The writing pages will be printed in black and white only (this helps keep production costs low so I can distribute this thing for free)- Short form writing (prose under 250 words, poems under 20 lines): These submissions will be formatted on one 5.5 x 8.5 page. If you want your piece to be formatted in a specific way, please format your work exactly how you would like it to look on the page- Long form writing (prose over 250 words, poems over 20 lines): Space is limited in the print version of the zine. Please go ahead and submit the entire thing, BUT indicate which segment of it you would like to appear in the print version - no more than 1000 words please. At most, your work will take up 2 pages in the zine.

For some secret third thingIf you’re planning on submitting something that doesn’t quite fit either of the previous categories, try your best to adapt those format rules to whatever you’re submitting and please feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions!
